Budget Crunch

Business moves forward tonight at the February Searcy City Council meeting. Many city employees and elected officials had to work hard to put a reasonable budget together after the previous administration left less than one month's payroll in the bank. The big story in the 2011 Searcy city budget is the across the board cuts.

In the midst of the city's budget woes, the issue of the illegally exacted A&P funds is in the news. In fact, News Talk 99.1 is running an online poll: "What should the city of Searcy do with the $450,000 surplus left from the A&P tax?" Of course, this public debate comes less than a month after Mayor David Morris proposed putting the remnant of the A&P tax proceeds in the general fund to shore up the city coffers that were spent down after last year's special mayoral election.

We encourage each of you to go beyond an online poll and let our elected officials know your ideas for the over $450,000 of remaining A&P tax proceeds. Contact information for the Searcy aldermen is available on the Alderman page of Searcy.com. Mayor Morris can be contacted at david.morris at cityofsearcy.org.
